Little League gives kids a chance

Speaker: Jim Daubenspeck, Blair Little League

Jim Daubenspeck, president of Blair Little League, discussed how volunteering for the nonprofit program is an "endless" time commitment, but well worth it.

"Not every kid in this day and age has the family structure that we grew up with," he said.

There are no tryouts or cuts in Little League, and all skill levels of athletes are welcome. Daubenspeck's son will help him coach this year. The teams play at Wederquist Field at the Blair Youth Sports Complex. Blair has hosted the Nebraska State Little League Championship for many years.

Daubenspeck is currently fundraising to install a playground near the ball fields in honor of his late son, Matthew. He has about $27,000 left to raise, he said.

About 3.5 million children worldwide participate in Little League, Daubenspeck said. Nebraska has about 3,000 Little Leaguers. Registration for Blair Little League is currently open: http://blairlittleleague.com/site/.
