Busting bad guys

Speaker: Mark Langan, author

Mark Langan talked about his work on drug investigations with the Omaha Police Department, where he retired in 2004 after 26 years. He is the author of "Busting Bad Guys, My True Crime Stories of Bookies, Drug Dealers and Ladies of the Night."

Langan recalls arresting hookers, johns and pimps in downtown Omaha, which was a "cesspool of prostitution" at one time. He served as the first gang sergeant in Omaha starting in 1987, when crack was the drug of choice. Now, he said, prescription drugs dominate drug task forces. Marijuana has and continues to be a problem. He said the biggest change in policing has been the use of video recording.

After retiring from the OPD, Langan went from "busting meth labs to chasing black Labs," he joked. He recently retired after 11 years with the Nebraska Humane Society.
